ABOUT
“…[Chun] explores the intersection between fine art and popular culture, without wasting time in callous irony. Her work is fresh and often surprising, with a cleverness which is both humane and devastatingly well observed.”
- Gillian McIver, Studio 75 (a-n)
Maggie Chun (she/her) is a British-Chinese artist based at the Lewisham Arthouse, an artist-run co-operative in South East London.
Chun’s practice explores themes surrounding domesticity, cultural identity, and the effects of second - generation diaspora. She examines the fractured, contradictory experience of belonging using a wide array of media - from playfully reappropriating objects and motifs to challenging the confines of traditional techniques such as textiles and embroidery. Her process-based work attempts to make sense of the liminal space between cultures and confronts the idea of “women’s work”.
WORKSHOPS
Interwoven Collective: Threads of Sanctuary @ Lewisham Arthouse, Deptford, Sept-Dec 2025
Interwoven Collective invited 8-12 participants from migrant, asylum seeker, and refugee communities in Lewisham to join a free textile project: Threads of Sanctuary. Threads of Sanctuary promoted belonging, connectedness, and the wellbeing of sanctuary seekers and people with no access to public funds in Lewisham Borough. Led by a collective of 4 textile artists (Jo Cooper - Janine Nelson - Sara Kelly - Maggie Chun), this project included a series of 8 weekly workshops and culminated in a joint exhibition at Lewisham Arthouse. Participants explored a wide range of textile practices and quilted together individual pieces that reflected their personal journeys.
This project was supported by the Lewisham Borough of Sanctuary, Lewisham Arthouse and SEAL.
